Young People Referrals to Headstart Residential Care

At Headstart Residential Care, we provide a safe, nurturing, and structured environment for young people who require specialist support due to complex emotional, behavioural, or social needs. Our referral process is designed to be clear, responsive, and centred around the best interests of the young person.

Who We Support

We welcome referrals for young people aged 8–18 who:

  • Have a diagnosis of Autism

  • Have associated Social, Emotional and Mental Health challenges

  • Have trauma or attachment-related challenges

  • A need for therapeutic, trauma-informed care in a residential setting

Each young person is assessed individually to ensure our services are the right fit for their needs and that we can provide the appropriate level of care and support.

Referral Process

Referrals can be made by:

  • Local authorities

  • Social workers

  • Health and education professionals

To make a referral, please provide:

  • A completed referral form

  • Recent assessments or reports (e.g., social care, CAMHS, education)

  • A care plan or placement objectives

  • Any relevant risk assessments

Our team will review the referral promptly and liaise with the referring professional to discuss suitability, placement availability, and next steps.

What to Expect

Once a referral is accepted:

We arrange an initial pre-placement meeting to gather and discuss all the necessary information.

We arrange a visit at the current placement or invited the child and their social team to visit one of our homes, in person.

The senior team of the home, Head of Residential Services and the Director of Residential Services meet to discuss if an offer of placement will be made.

If a provision is offered and accepted, a tailored care plan is developed in collaboration with the young person and professionals involved.

Ongoing communication and progress updates are provided throughout the placement

We are committed to providing a stable, therapeutic environment where young people can feel safe, valued, and empowered to grow.

The young person has made great progress since being at Headstart, to the point that his staffing has now reduced to 1:1 in the daytime (he was 3:1 a few years ago). Staff really understand and appreciate him, and have helped him develop his independence and confidence. His keyworker in particular is amazing and so dedicated. The team are professional and keep me up to date.

I’ve consistently found the team to be highly professional, communicative, and responsive. Their commitment to supporting the child is evident in the positive progress I’ve observed, particularly in how they tailor care to individual needs. The collaborative approach and openness to partnership working have made a real difference in ensuring continuity and quality of care.
